Hey folks, today we have Pixar’s adventures with AI, Robotics + Gen AI and Bytedance (Tiktok’s owner) spending $1B on NVIDIA GPUs.

Let’s get to it.

ByteDance, the company behind TikTok has recently purchased a load of GPUs from NVIDIA. Actually, GPUs worth more than $1B. That estimates about 100k GPUs and that’s huge. For comparison, ChatGPT was trained on 10k GPUs.

Nvidia’s CEO said a few weeks earlier that in 3-4 years, we would see companies spending billions on GPUs. I guess that train has left the station.

So text-to-video technology might not be going quite as fast as the rest and mostly comes out looking like GIFs, but that hasn’t stopped Pixar from making waves with AI on their latest film, Elemental. (Anyone spot my pun skills there…?)

Apparently it’s reeeaally hard to capture the dynamic movements of things like fire and water whilst simultaneously capturing the shape and sensibility of a character. (The characters are based on the elements in the film.) Using Neural Style Transfer, the same AI tech that morphs images into specified styles, scientists and artists at Disney have absolutely nailed it for this film. Check out the link for more details on the back story and the tech used.

This is just about the perfect combo of two of my favourite things: robotics and generative AI. Parallel Domain has created a virtual world synthetic data generator. What on Earth is that!? The idea is that a user can use prompts to create all manner of scenarios in a 3D simulated world, with the world then generating many random variations of the scenario that can be used to train bespoke autonomous agents. Things like robots, drones, and self-driving cars. Want your boat to be able to navigate a sea of clowns? Check. How to dodge a whale in the middle of the road? Tick.
