Making LLMs easy

PLUS: Microsoft's AI 365 Copilot, Apple's Siri AI and AI as CTO

Hey folks, this has been the biggest week in AI so far (and we’ve had huge ones before)!

Today we’ve got Microsoft adding AI to their set of workplace tools, Zapier’s natural language API, Apple’s Siri updates and AI as your CTO.

Let’s get to it.

🤌 Our Picks

Highlights if you've only got 2 minutes

Microsoft continues unabated in their lead against competitors in the AI race, and they’re really going for it with the announcement of the Microsoft 365 Copilot. OK, the announcement video is pretty cringe and contained way too much of the word “drudgery”, but I low-key loved it. The Copilot tools will integrate generative AI technology into aspects of their 365 apps - Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Teams, and more… You’ll be able to use text generation in word, analyse contents of Excel sheets and follow-up with prompt-based questions, and create Powerpoint slides too. It looks to me like the AI will even be able to use the contents of your OneDrive to enhance the outputs, but don’t quote me on that! More detail on this blog from Microsoft.

Let’s be honest, getting the most out of all these natural language models isn’t really as accessible as everyone says it is - all the API authorisations, the API calls, and the generation of outputs can be a real pain in the bum. The team at Zapier have been working around the clock to pull together their Natural Language Actions (NLA) API, which essentially uses LLMs to make LLM APIs easier to use. Super nifty stuff!

Zapier’s 5k+ apps and 20k+ actions are all available, and all their API requires is a cheeky language instructions field. Looking beyond this, it’s even been integrated into the LangChain package, allowing you to use just a few lines of code to generate a Zapier Toolkit to get hold of Zapier’s actions right inside your code.

Apple's putting Siri through a linguistic workout with their new natural language generation tech, codenamed "Bobcat." So far, it's flexing its joke-telling muscles on Apple TV's tvOS 16.4 beta, with plans to roll it out to other Apple gadgets later. This ain't your mama's ChatGPT chatbot; Apple's focused on upgrading Siri's template-based system for a more fluent, less clunky experience. As for when this witty word wizardry will spread its wings beyond Apple TV, the timeline remains a mystery.

If you need any evidence that ChatGPT is able to turn inexperienced coders into those who can produce an awesome Chrome extension, then look no further. (Don’t worry, it’s self-proclaimed inexperience, check the thread.) This chap used ChatGPT as a guide to building a Chrome extension that allows you to insert prompt responses into… basically anything? It seems to live inside the text boxes of any websites you visit, and all you need to do is start it off with “/ai”, follow up with a prompt, and out comes a response. I love this. It’s a true demonstration of a cool home project by someone who claims to lack expertise, producing something that looks really useful. Let’s wait to see how it holds up in practice!

Bonus pick: yesterday’s Stripe announcement with OpenAI is worth mentioning again. OpenAI partners with Stripe for seamless ChatGPT and DALL·E payments. Stripe worked on GPT-3 powered support last year and now integrating GPT-4, the first output is in Stripe Docs.

(Sponsor) Riverside FM has just launched AI transcriptions alongside their awesome studio-quality podcast and video recording software.

What’s even more amazing: it offers unlimited AI transcriptions for free.

→ available in over 100 languages
→ no sign-up is required
→ it’s built on Whisper by OpenAI (unmatched accuracy)

Use the AI transcription by Riverside as subtitles, show notes, or first drafts for blog posts without wasting additional time.
