Consider this a call to arms to pick up your swords and mount your horses my friends, because it’s time to accelerate the open-source battle against the big machines of OpenAI, Google, Microsoft and the like. We’ve just been given a big old heap of encouragement…

This leaked Discord post from a Google employee working on AI expresses concern that they may be simply unable to compete with open-source. The community is running LLMs on phones, fine-tuning personal AIs on laptops, and achieving state-of-the-art results at immensely lower prices in fractions of the time. The total output of a tech behemoth has been whittled down to the weekend of a single person through sheer grit, determination, and individual genius.

Check out some important parts of the leaked document here. (link)

- I think whoever wrote this should get a big fat raise and Google should look at it favourably, and embrace the space.

If we’re calling arms to drive open-source forward, then Hugging Face should be our Queen - they are simply prolific enablers of the community! And now they’ve partnered with ServiceNow (yeah, I’m kinda confused by their involvement too) to release StarCoder, their fully open-sourced code generation model.

For the coders out there, this is seriously exciting because they even claim it outperforms the models used to train OpenAI’s GitHub Copilot. From an ethical point of view, it’s trained on an open dataset called The Stack, which has 19 million fully-permissible code bases with 6 terabytes of code. But the best bit? It integrates with VSCode.

Who said that old farts can’t keep up with tech? Despite approaching the ripe old age of 80 and sometimes barely making any sense, Joe Biden’s administration has been at the forefront of open and honest discussions about AI. They’re now announcing a set of new actions to promote responsible AI innovation—very timely given the recent resignation of Geoffrey Hinton over AI safety concerns.

The actions: $140M National AI Institute; a public assessment of existing generative AI; and more.

If you felt left out because you didn’t manage to get access to Microsoft’s Bing AI then don’t worry - those users won’t be able to brag for much longer - it’s available to everyone now.

It’s also getting a heavy uplift of features! It’ll be able to handle images and videos, will have plug-in capabilities (so you might be able to get it to book tables at restaurants or order groceries), and chatbot conversations will be stored in your own history.
