Why AI will save the world
PLUS: truly open source model, IG chatbot, and LLaMAindex funding.
Hey folks, today we have Marc Andreessen with a long post with his take on all of the AI risk discussions. Redpajama is making its 7B open-source LLM available to everyone, and there are some reports of Instagram sneakily testing an AI chatbot.
Let’s get to it.
From our sponsor:
Slash LLM Costs & Improve Performance
GPTCache, an MIT-licensed open-source (free as in 🍺) semantic cache, allows you to cache LLM responses with a few lines of code, boosting your LLM applications up to 100x faster.
💰 Save money on your LLM bill
📈 Improve app performance and scalability
🐳 Docker image supports any language

Marc Andreessen of VC firm a16z has just gone all in on AI doomers, and his message couldn’t be clearer: stay away from my investments. This is a long post but it’s well worth your time - make a cup of tea and get stuck in. He discusses how intelligent human attributes are what make lives better, and AI is a way to enhance this aspect of us through AI teachers, AI coaches, AI assistants and more.
He argues that the irrational moral panic is reminiscent of historic cult behaviour, and addresses questions of societal and economic impacts, inequality, the potential for bad acting, and more. Finally (and the biggest salt-pincher given the VC context): small and big firms alike should be able to develop as aggressively as they like.

Oh great, here we go again. Despite Snap’s negatively-received in-app chatbot and others being mostly shrugged off, Instagram might be about to deploy its very own one. It’s all rumours and floating at the moment, but there’s no smoke without fire… Word on the street is that it’ll be there to add into convos, chat with independently, and will have 30 different personalities to choose from.

The EU is at it again on the old AI regulation front. (Andreessen won’t be happy…) As part of discussions around their Code of Practice on Online Disinformation, they’re suggesting enforcing signatories to label deep fakes and other AI-generated content. Aspects of this seem pretty fair to me - AI art and deep fakes, for example, pose the real possibility of harming people directly by creating fake images and videos. But moving over to text, it seems almost infeasible - it won’t be long before half the internet is composed of AI-generated text! Then what? Label it all?

Some background: Since LLaMA by Meta was not fully available for commercial use cases, Red Pajama announced their plans to train a model on LLaMA-like dataset in April.
Fast forward to now, RedPajama has taken the wraps off a 7B model birthed from that project, ready and available for everyone to use. And the best part? It's good to go for both open and commercial applications. And if that's not enough, it's even topping the charts in the 'instruct' category, outshining the Falcon 7B we talked about yesterday. It's truly a great time to be in the AI space with the new SOTA in open source every day.
