Microsoft announces Copilot+PCs for on-device AI.

Microsoft just dropped a bombshell: Copilot+ PCs, a new breed of Windows laptops designed to be AI powerhouses. We're talking 40+ trillion operations per second, all-day battery life, and access to cutting-edge AI models – right on your device. It’s also improving Copilot, adding the multimodal capacities of GPT-4o.

What's going on here?

Microsoft unveils Copilot+ PCs, upgrades to Copilot and plans for on-device AI.

What does this mean?

Copilot+ PCs add a high-performance Neural Processing Unit (NPU) to the system architecture alongside CPU and GPU. These devices are connected to large language models in the cloud and small language models on the device.

With Copilot+PCs, Microsoft has rebuilt Windows from the ground up with AI at its core with 40+ AI models that’ll run on the device. This means your laptop will be your personal AI assistant, capable of insane feats like photographic memory (Recall), real-time AI image generation (Cocreate), and live translation of 40+ languages (Live Captions).

The new Copilot app is getting multimodal capabilities of OpenAI’s GPT-4o and it’ll be shipped to all Copilot users this year (irrespective of the PCs). Now we know why OpenAI only announced a Mac app.

Why should I care?

Microsoft Surface and OEM partners like Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo, and Samsung are launching Copilot+ PCs starting at $999, with pre-orders available now and availability starting June 18. Microsoft claims these PCs outperform Apple's MacBook Air 15" while delivering all-day battery life.
