New letter on AI safety and risk
PLUS: Nvidia touches the mark, Judge brings new rules for ChatGPT and a lensless camera with AI.
Hey Folks, today we have another statement from the AI big dogs about how risky the systems are, and people are flocking in to sign it.
Nvidia finally touched the $1T mark but stumbles later in the day, and one judge is putting out clear rulings for use of Ai in his court.
Let’s get to it.

Nvidia has finally done it. On Tuesday, Nvidia opened at a $1T market cap, rubbing shoulders with the big boys, joining the likes of Apple, Microsoft, Alphabet, and Amazon. This is big deal because even Meta is not in there.
Granted, they slipped a bit to $990 billion by close of trading, but hey, we all stumble a little on the way up, right? Techcrunch has a nice report (subscribers only) on the trillion dollar club and the future of Nvidia.

But it’s different from the pause AI letter. An SF based non-profit called Centre for AI Safety has put out a statement on AI risk which is a single sentence: “Mitigating the risk of extinction from AI should be a global priority alongside other societal-scale risks such as pandemics and nuclear war.”
No mentions of a pause, or making a committee. Just the notion that this needs attention. With again a bunch of researchers, AI founders, and artists signing the statement. What’s new is that this one claims a signature from Sam Altman as well.
Check out the director’s thread on their motivations behind the statement and a brief review of the good and bad about these letters, public warnings, and business drama surrounding these.

No ChatGPT in my court - Judge orders all AI-generated content must be declared and checked.
Following the spectacle we had, where the lawyer showed up with 6 made up cases in the court, other judges are taking note. Texas federal Judge Brantley Starr has taken steps to ensure no such tomfoolery happens in his courtroom.
A new requirement for any attorney gracing his court is that they must now swear on their briefcase that "no portion of the filing was drafted by generative artificial intelligence," or if it was, that a real, live human gave it a once-over.
And reading the official statements, they have done pretty good job of not falling into the fear trap and banning AI. It’s more about taking responsibility if the AI messes up and you take that to court.
